What are Natural Urges of the Body?

As per the Ayurvedic scriptures, the natural urges of the body are known as veg or vega’s (in English), it’s not vegas. These natural urges of body are classified as Adharniya Vega and Dharniya Vega.

What is Adharniya Vega?

The Sanskrit word Vega means natural urge and Adharniya means non-suppressible.

Ayurveda describes spontaneous flows throughout the body that aligns with subtle impulses in the mind, called urges. These bodily urges are natural and necessary for the proper health and functioning of the body, mind, and emotions.

The purpose of the Vega’s or the natural urges of the body is to remove the toxins from the body that are produced by the body’s metabolism. Repression of any of these vegas leads to imbalances and then diseases.

Some people say there are 13 natural urges in Ayurveda, whereas some refer to 14 natural urges in Ayurveda. In some of the blogs on the internet, you will find 15 natural urges in Ayurveda.

They include Laughter i.e. urge to laugh as Adharniya vega, but as per Ashtanga Hridayam (Scripture of Ayurveda), laughter is not mentioned as an Adharniya vega. But Ayurvedic scriptures refer to laughter as an important tool for human health.

Let’s dive deeper into 14 Adharniya Vegas (Natural urge of the body)

non suppressible natural urges of body

Adhovata Vega (Urge to Fart)

The first natural urge of the body is Adhovata vega or in simple language an urge to fart (suppression of flatus)

In case if suppress your urge to fart on a regular basis due to any reasons then this suppression of flatus will weaken Apana Vayu and it will give rise to many problems such as:

  • Pain in the Abdomen
  • Bloating
  • Obstruction to the elimination of Flatus
  • Dysuria i.e. painful or difficult Urination
  • Constipation,
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Abdominal Tumor
  • Air wastes will be absorbed into the bone marrow, aggravating Arthritis
  • Nerves Issues
  • Loss of Vision
  • Diseases of the Heart

So next time when you feel like farting do it.

Pureesha Vega (Urge to Defecate)

The next Adharniya vega is Pureesha Vega which is an Urge to Defecate or an urge to feces. In simple language an urge to pass stool or shit.

Urge to Defecate is suppressed by children when they are busy playing or if they are shy. Adults suppress this urge if are busy at work or due to hygiene issues of toilets in public places or due to any strange habit.

Repeated suppression of the urge to feces or defecate weakens Apana Vayu and it will lead to:

  • Constipation

  • Muscle cramps
  • Pain in the calves
  • Headache
  • Autotoxicity
  • Spasms, cutting pain in the rectum
  • Oppression in the region of the heart
  • Foul breath
  • Diseases mentioned under the suppression of flatus

Next time whenever you feel like passing stool find a toilet & get rid of the waste.

Mutra Vega (Urge to Urinate)

Mutra Vega is an Urge to Urinate or an urge to pee. An urge to urinate is generally suppressed when someone is busy at work, during exams, or while traveling. Voluntary retention of urine can cases many serious issues in the body.

  • Pain in the Abdomen
  • Giddiness
  • Malabsorption
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Mental and Emotional Irritation
  • Further, it suppresses the Agni fire and Pitta

Nidra Vega (Urge to Sleep)

The next Adharniya vega is Nidra Vega. Nidra Vega is an urge to sleep.  People of this 21st century believe that sleeping is a waste of time, so they keep themself awake even if the body & mind want to sleep.

(Nidra as Adharniya Vega) Sleep or nidra allows the body to rest, rejuvenate and repair itself that is the reason nidra is considered adharniya vega.

Suppression of urge to sleep or Nidra causes:

  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Delusion
  • The feeling of heaviness of the Head and Eyes
  • Exhaustion
  • Depletion of Ojas (the Vital Force)
  • Lassitude ( State of Physical or Mental tiredness: Lack of Energy)
  • Too many Yawnings
  • Squeezing Pain All over the Body

So take proper sleep to reset and rejuvenate your body.

Udagar Vega (Urge to Burp)

The next Adharniya vega is Udagar Vega. Udagar Vega is the burping reflex, an urge to burp or eructation. The burping reflex is a way for the body to get rid of excess air from the upper alimentary tract.

Generally, it happens after the meal when the food is getting digested or in case of excessive gas due to digestive issues.

Openly burping in public is not considered appropriate behavior. So many people belch as silently as possible, placing a hand in front of their mouth.  But some people completely suppress the urge to burp. This aggravates the upward energy that is Udana Vayu.

Suppression of the urge to burp causes:

  • Cough
  • Hiccough,
  • Palpitations
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Tremors.
  • In the long run, it can cause Diseases related to the Lungs and the Heart

Kasa Vega (Urge to Cough)

The next natural urge of the human body is Kasa Vega. Kasa Vega is a cough reflex, an urge to cough. Coughing is a natural reflex that helps to get rid of mucus, pollutants, allergies, and infections from the respiratory tract.

Suppression of urge of cough causes:

  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Asthma
  • COPD
  • Wheezing
  • Anorexia
  • Loss of taste (or Appetite)
  • Heart diseases
  • Emaciation (Abnormally thin or weak)
  • Hiccup

Shrama Swasa Vega (Urge to Breathing Heavily on Exertion)

The next Adharniya vega is Shrama swasa vega. Shrama swasa vega is an urge to Breathing Heavily on exertion. After intense physical activity, never suppress the urge to Breathe Heavily.

The suppression of the urge to Breathing Heavily on exertion may lead to:

  • Coughing
  • Asthma
  • Shallow Breath
  • Low Vitality
  • Heart Disease
  • Tumors of the Abdomen
  • Delusion

Jrimbha Vega (Urge to Yawn)

The next natural urge of the human body is Jrimbha Vega. Jrimbha Vega is a yawn reflex, an urge to yawn. I remember, when I was a kid in school, it was taught to us that while yawning you have to cover your mouth with your hand. But some people while practicing these manners started suppressing the yawning reflex.

The repeated suppression of the urge to yawn may lead to:

  • Tremors
  • Numbness
  • Convulsion (Uncontrolled shaking of the body)
  • Insomnia
  • Harms the Nervous System
  • Deranges Vayu

Ashru Vega (Urge to Cry or Weep to Release Tears)

The next natural urge of the human body is Ashru Vega. Ashru Vega is an urge to cry or weep to release tears. Females are good at crying and I appreciate them for this because they are at the heart center and flow with nature in case of crying.

This is also a reason that females live longer in comparison to men, and suffer less from heart attacks.

Our society teaches us, that men should be tuff, and made of Steel, men don’t feel the pain and crying… “it is a girly thing”. This is utter nonsense.

Suppression of the urge to cry may lead to:

  • Running Nose
  • Eye Disease
  • Pain in the Eyes
  • Pain in the Head, and Heart
  • Stiffness of the Neck
  • Loss of Taste
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Giddiness
  • Abdominal Tumors
  • Allergies
  • Heart Disease
  • Suppressed Emotions

So guys next time when your heart is heavy and you feel like crying don’t hesitate. It takes courage to cry. In the case of females, I know they will never hesitate, that’s wonderful.

Chardi Vega (Urge to Vomit)

The next Adharniya vega is Chardi Vega. Chardi Vega is a vomiting reflex, an urge to vomit. Vomiting is not a comfortable experience for anyone.

The Human Body triggers this reflex when it is not able to process & absorb the food. But due to the mental blocks related to vomiting, some people try to avoid it.

Suppression of the urge to vomit causes:

  • Herpes
  • Rashes on the Skin
  • Skin diseases
  • Irritation in the Eyes
  • Anemia
  • Fevers
  • Cough
  • Oppression in the chest
  • Nausea
  • Pigmented patches on the Face
  • Swelling (Dropsy)

Shukra Vega (Urge to Ejactulate or Viginal Secretion)

The last natural urge of the human body is Shukra Vega i.e. ejaculatory reflex. It is an urge for ejaculating semen (for males) or release vaginal secretions (for females).

It is observed that men try to suppress the ejaculatory reflex just for the sake of extending the sexual intercourse timing or while doing tantra practices. It takes a lot of practice, exercise, muscle control, and breath control to delay ejaculation.

Suppression of ejaculatory reflex leads to various complications like:

  • Constant Discharge
  • Weakening of Reproductive and Urinary Systems
  • Pain and Swelling of the Genitals
  • Fever,
  • Swollen Prostate
  • Difficult Urination
  • Cardiac Pain
  • Insomnia
  • Mental and Emotional Irritation & Frustration
  • Vayu Derangement

Natural Urges of the Body that should not be suppressed as per Ayurveda. I hope you will start implementing Ayurveda in your life.
