History of Ayurveda
Ayurveda is a holistic, natural system of health, originating in India more than 5,000 years ago. Perhaps the oldest extant medical system in the world, Ayurveda’s teachings are timeless.
Ayurveda offers remedies for illness and is designed as a preventive system that supports consistent health and longevity.
There are three main scriptures of Ayurveda and these are:
Charaka Samhita i.e. a compilation of studies of Maharishi Charaka who is known as the Father of Medicine.
Sushruta Samhita compilation of studies of Maharishi Sushruta. Maharishi Sushruta is also known as “Father of Indian Surgery” and “Father of Plastic Surgery”. He is famous for inventing and developing surgical procedures.
The third version is Ashtanga hridayam by MahaRishi Vagbhata, which is a concise version of the work of Charaka and Sushruta.
These three Ayurvedic scriptures are still used today.
What is Ayurveda?
As per Maharishi Sushruta, the Sanskrit word Ayurved is the combination of two words “Ayur” & ” Ved”
“Ayur” means life & ” Ved” can be translated as knowledge or science.
So Ayurved or Ayurveda is knowledge of life or the science of life and longevity. or Divine Science of life. But Maharishi Charaka expands upon this definition, telling us that Ayur is the combination of the body, sense organs, mind, and soul, the factor responsible for preventing decay and death, which sustains the body over time.

Why Ayurveda?
Why you must follow Ayurveda in your life?
Just as trees, plants, and flowers are part of the natural world, so are we ” the humans”. Our human body is a combination of five elements i.e. fire, air, space, Earth, and water. The focus of Ayurveda is to bring all the five elements back to their natural balanced state.
The principles of the elements: fire, air, space, earth, and water are always at work inside of us and around us in nature. As seasons change, as the time of day changes, and as years go by, our health depends on our ability to go with the natural flow of life & nature.
We humans and nature are in a constant relationship. Ayurveda as medical science is based upon this practical, real, and exquisite foundation. Ayurveda doesn’t specialize, which means it doesn’t focus on healing just one organ or one symptom at a time. Ayurveda is a whole system of health.
When you exhibit symptoms of imbalance or disease, Ayurveda takes into consideration your mental, physical, and energetic/spiritual state.
When you approach an Ayurvedic practitioner, they will ask you a variety of questions and perform a physical examination. The examination will help them understand the root cause of symptoms and disease.
Then, they will recommend you a treatment for your disease, so that you can bring your body back into balance, through lifestyle, nutrition, diet, exercise, relaxation, cleansing, and medicinal herbs.
Once you are feeling well again, your ayurvedic practitioner will give you recommendations to maintain balance, which is the condition for optimal health.
When you are in balance, you’ll enjoy good health and immunity. Your symptoms will disappear, you’ll feel less irritable, you’ll think more clearly, you’ll catch fewer colds (if any), and you can even reduce or stop suffering from seasonal allergies. You’ll feel well and be able to enjoy your life more.
Ayurveda is ancient wisdom and modern practicality. Ayurveda addresses the vitality of your entire being body, mind, and life-force energy for a life of balance, sustainable health, and longevity. This was all about
